Why a pass means something
See who sets the pass mark, what we have proven, and the numbers behind every result.
In short
You do real work with an AI tool, and we check how you use it. AI examiners mark your work. They must quote your own words for every rating.
People check the marking. While the Examination Board has not approved automatic release, a person reviews every result before you see it, and people decide every appeal.
We are not accredited yet. No study yet shows that a pass predicts how people work. Every exam is in English. The sections below show what we have measured and what we have not.
Who decides what a pass means
The policy defines 6 roles and requires conflicts to be declared. Appointments to the Examination Board and Impartiality Committee are not complete; the descriptions below distinguish their required duties from completed work.
- Academic Board
- Reviews the Standard and appoints the Examination Board. Six named members; never writes questions or marks work. Meet the Academic Board
- Examination Board
- Membership is not complete. The policy assigns this Board approval of questions, pass marks and marking configurations.
- Examiners
- AI examiners read the evidence and mark your result. A named person countersigns Applied AI Specialist and Applied AI Strategist, which you hold for life. On the paid exams, a person reads every safety event, every cheating flag and every result on the pass mark before release. On the free exam, a person reviews every result before you see it. A person decides every review, appeal and complaint. You can ask for a person to look again at any result.
- Registrar
- Issues, renews and withdraws credentials, checks identity, runs the public register and handles refunds.
- Accommodations coordinator
- Decides requests for extra time or other adjustments. Reports to the Examination Board, never to sales.
- Impartiality Committee
- Membership is not complete. The policy requires a mostly independent committee to review conflicts, exceptions and appeals at least twice a year.
We sit inside Straits AI Group, which also publishes the AI+ Library. Nobody who writes questions or signs results is paid on sales. No course or book is ever required to pass. Publishing-side experts contribute under the Examination Board's rules and the same conflict declarations as anyone else.
What we have and have not proven
- Applied AI Foundations and Applied AI Certified (L1) are approved provisionally, before their evaluation study. What that means for a result.
- We are not accredited by any body, including ISO/IEC 17024. We say so and publish our evidence instead.
- The Examination Board and the Impartiality Committee are not yet fully appointed. We publish the membership when it is complete.
- No study yet shows that a pass predicts how someone works with AI on the job. That study is planned, not done.
- No employer, professional body or government requires this credential.
- Every exam is in English, so it measures English alongside the skill. Other languages are not ready.
The numbers
The technical manual explains how each figure is made and lists what is still pending.
Reviewer and fairness figures refresh from recorded results each hour. Only exams with a recorded production start qualify; review, sandbox and internal records are excluded. Unstamped history is not included. These rules do not show that the exams are valid. The cumulative ratings below come from a published snapshot.
Blind re-marking of free exam results
One result in ten of every exam is chosen by its exam id. A person marks it again without seeing the AI examiner's ratings. The figure below is for Applied AI Foundations and refreshes each hour; the technical manual has every exam. 0 rubric events have been compared so far. The bar applies once 100 events have been compared; until then the figure is descriptive.
How precise a score is
Each exam version prints its reliability and standard error of measurement (SEM) once it has 30 completed, scorable results. Two scores less than two SEMs apart do not show that one person is stronger. No exam version has reached 30 yet; the closest has 8. Every exam version.
No reviewer-agreement group meets the publication rule of 30 scored events with a defined QWK. No fairness comparison meets its minimum group size.
Pass-mark reviews
The Examination Board sets provisional pass marks. Panels of subject experts replace them and review each mark at least every two years.

How the Standard is set and checked
The Standard defines capabilities. Each exam version defines its audience, evidence, permitted interpretation, and release status. Crosswalks distinguish broad domain mappings from explicit item evidence; they do not establish equivalent scores.
- 17 broad mappings; 4 explicit item mappings
- US Department of Labor AI Literacy Framework, TEN 07-25 (13 February 2026): 5 content areas, 25 sub-areas
- 11 broad mappings; 0 explicit item mappings
- Anthropic AI Fluency Index (February 2026): the 11 observable behaviours of the 4D framework
- 7 broad mappings; 0 explicit item mappings
- AISA rubric: 11 criteria across 5 dimensions
- 4 broad mappings; 0 explicit item mappings
- Bryq AI Fluency Assessment: 5 dimensions
- 3 broad mappings; 0 explicit item mappings
- Pearson Certiport Generative AI Foundations: 4 domains, 20 objectives
Our practice follows the professional standards for testing. ISO/IEC 17024 covers bodies that certify people; the AERA, APA and NCME Standards cover validity; the ITC guidelines cover online delivery.
The Examination Board sets provisional pass marks. Panels of subject experts replace them and review each mark at least every two years. Every pass mark, result and appeal is written to an append-only log, with who did it and when. A standard that later tightens never cancels a credential already earned.
Our policies
6 policies govern every credential. These summaries are plain English; the policy text governs where they differ. We drafted them against the 2012 edition of ISO/IEC 17024. The April 2026 edition is not yet reflected.
Certification scheme
SIAA-POL-01
Defines what we certify and how; every other policy and every description of a credential must agree with it. You take the exam under the scheme version in force on the day. Passing never depends on buying or completing any training. We publish the Standard, the areas and the skills. We do not publish live exercises, marking guides or the pass mark.
Code of conduct
SIAA-POL-02
Be honest in every declaration, from identity to eligibility. Own the judgement behind your work; passing off unchecked AI output as your own judgement is what the exam catches. Describe the credential accurately, never as accredited, government-recognised or employer-required. Applied AI Engineer is not a professional engineering licence, so name it in full and never shorten it. We tell you what is alleged and hear you before any finding. A lapsed credential, an appeal or a complaint is never a conduct matter.
Appeals and complaints
SIAA-POL-03
Two separate rights. An appeal contests a decision about you; a complaint is about our service or a process failure. Every stage has a published deadline. An examiner who did not mark your exam decides a review. Staff who were not involved in your exam, and who did not decide the review, decide a formal appeal. Raising either never counts against you and never limits your legal rights.
Renewal
SIAA-POL-04
A credential is a claim about now, not about the year you earned it. Renewal creates a new record linked to the old serial; we never edit a credential in place. Continuing development may come from any credible source, not only ours. An expired credential and a withdrawn one display differently, because lapsed is not fraudulent.
Accommodations
SIAA-POL-05
Adjustments so the exam measures your skill with AI and nothing else. We read disability broadly: physical, sensory, cognitive and learning, mental health, chronic and temporary conditions, and pregnancy or nursing. You get a decision within 10 business days, with written reasons if we decline, and a right to appeal. Health information never reaches the markers, the certificate or the register. A granted accommodation is free and changes how you show a skill, not which skill we certify.
Impartiality and conflicts of interest
SIAA-POL-06
A pass must mean the same thing whoever you are, however you prepared and whoever you know. Nobody holds an examining role and a sales, marketing or authorship role without a documented exception. Everyone declares conflicts on appointment and yearly, and steps aside when one arises. The Impartiality Committee reviews the declarations, the exceptions and the appeals trend at least twice a year.
